If you are on iOS 12, and experienced a crash (Docs To Go would start to open then immediately shut down and return you to the Home screen), check the App store for an update to Docs To Go (5.6.4). That version should fix this problem. Just hit “update” from the app store and the new version will install over the old one that then it should work fine.

Even though Docs To Go Premium has been discontinued, you can still install it on a new phone or reinstall it on an old one. The process is different depending on how you originally purchased Docs To Go Premium.

There are two ways you could have purchased Docs To Go Premium. One is by purchasing one of the premium features inside the Docs To Go Standard app. This is called an “in app purchase”. The other way is to purchase the Docs To Go Premium app itself.

Regardless of how you purchased the premium app, you can still use Premium on a new device or an old one that has been reset.

If you purchased via In App Purchase

You must install Docs To Go Standard from the App store. It is still available by searching or clicking here.

Once you do that, the premium features should automatically work. If they don’t, then it’s most likely because you aren’t logged in with the right Apple ID on your phone. The Apple ID that was used when you originally purchased the in app purchase MUST be what you see when you open the Settings app on your phone and then tap on your name at the top of the screen. If ads are still showing or the premium features are not available, you need to know the Apple ID you used to purchase and log in with that.

Note: Once you do that, you might need to restart the phone and/or reinstall Dos To Go Standard in order for the ads to go away and the premium features to show up.

If you purchased the Docs To Go Premium App

The Premium key won’t show up “normally” in the App Store anymore since it’s been discontinued. You need to go to the App Store and click on the icon in the upper right corner (the one that looks like a head with a circle around it) to go into your App Store account. Then go to Purchased and then My Purchases and you will see all the apps you have either purchased or downloaded. Then toggle to “Not on this iPhone” at the top of the screen, and search for Docs To Go. Once you find it, you can then download it as long as it is still compatible with the OS on your phone. The last iOS version that Docs To Go was tested on is iOS 15.4. Anything newer than that it may or may not work.

Docs To Go requires a communications protocol called Bonjour to run. Bonjour comes on all Macs and most PCs but sometimes it’s missing from the PC and must be installed.

It’s called Bonjour for Print Services because it’s mainly used to connect to a printer over WiFi but Docs To Go uses it as well.

You can install it from here.

Apple introduced a new permission with iOS 14. It asks for permission for Docs To To to find and connect to devices on your network.

It is necessary to say OK to this permission if you want to sync your computer with your iPhone or iPad with the Desktop Sync feature.

Many people are saying Don’t Allow, not realizing the ramifications, and then can’t realize they can’t sync.

To fix this, do the following:

  1. Open the Settings app on the iOS device.
  2. Scroll down to the app section (towards the bottom) and find Docs To Go and tap to open it.
  3. Turn Local Network to ON (green)

Then go back to Docs To Go and try again to sync.

There are 2 ways to access iCloud documents from Docs To Go.

The first way is to just tap on iCloud in the Cloud tab in Docs To Go. There you will see any files that you saved to iCloud from Docs To Go.

However, if you have files that you saved to iCloud that WERE NOT put there by Docs To Go, you have to use a different method. This method is called the Document Converter.

To use the Document Converter do this:

1. In the Cloud tab, instead of tapping on iCloud, tap on the document converter icon (the icon that looks like a puzzle piece in the upper right corner).
2. When you see Browse, tap on iCloud
3. That will take you to ALL your files stored in your iCloud.
4. You can then open the files in Docs To Go, regardless of how they got to your iCloud account.

To save files that are currently in the Phone tab to iCloud, you can just do a Save As, and then change where you are saving them from Phone to Cloud under Select Folder. If you do this, they will be saved to the Docs To Go Premium folder in iCloud.

If you want to save them to somewhere OTHER THAN the Docs To Go folder in iCloud, use Export To from the menu in Docs To Go rather than Save As.

If you have already purchased Docs To Go Premium you can download it on a new Apple device without having to pay again as long as you use the same Apple ID you used when you first purchased Docs To Go Premium.

Here’s how to do it with Docs To Go.

First, determine how you originally purchased Docs To Go Premium.*

You either purchased Docs To Go Premium directly from the app store or you downloaded our free version of Docs To Go called Docs To Go Standard, and then did an “In App Purchase” to upgrade the free app to Premium.

If you purchased Docs To Go Premium:

Go to the App Store and tap on the icon in the upper right corner to go to your App Store settings (the face with a circle around it). Then toggle to “Not on this iPhone (or iPad) and search for Docs To Go Premium. It should show up for you to download.

If you downloaded Docs To Go Standard and then purchased Docs To Go Premium:

First download Docs To Go Standard onto the new device. Once downloaded, the premium features should be available.

If they are not there, then you can go to Settings/Store and hit the button to Redeem Purchases. If that doesn’t work, then it’s most likely because you aren’t logged in with the right Apple ID on your phone.

The Apple ID that was used when you originally purchased the in app purchase MUST be what you see when you open the Settings app on your phone and then tap on your name at the top of the screen. If ads are still showing or the premium features are not available, you need to know the Apple ID you used to purchase and log in with that.

*Note: If you still have your old device, you can tell whether you purchased Docs To Go Premium or paid for premium with an in app purchase this way:

Docs To Go Premium when purchased outright, has a small gold star on the icon:

Docs To Go Standard (free version) does not:

Uninstall:

  1. Go into the Applications folder and move DocstoGoDesktop or Documents To Go Desktop Sync to the trash.
  2. Open Finder, and click Go on the top toolbar. Hold the option key and select Library from the dropdown list. Then, go to Application Support and delete the DataViz folder.

Note: Both of these steps are necessary to do a clean reinstall of Docs To Go Desktop.

Docs to Go has a feature where you can open a Microsoft Office or PDF file in the Docs to Go app from your email. To do this, there is a short procedure you can follow.

First, you are going to want to click on the file in order to download it.

Next, you should tap and hold on the file until a screen shows up, and then you should tap “Share”. Another alternative option is to enter the file and click on the share button in the top right corner (a square with an arrow pointing upwards).

After you press share, a pop up will appear on the bottom of your screen. Scroll through the apps until you see “Copy to DocsToGo”. If this does not show up, click the three dots “More”, and then scroll down until you find “Copy to DocsToGo”.

Now just tap on this button and it will open your file in the Docs to Go application.

To get files that are on your phone in Docs To Go to your computer can be done in several ways and each requires several steps.

Why would you want to do this?

  1. You were using Docs To Go and have files stored in the “Phone” tab and now want to sync them with your desktop computer.
  2. You WERE syncing with your Desktop computer, but that computer crashed or was lost/stolen so your files are now “stranded” on your phone or iPad.
  3. You WERE syncing with your Desktop computer but had to “unpair” and “re-pair” the two and need to get your files to the desktop via the new pairing.

There are 2 ways to do this.  One is using Docs To Go and one is using a USB cord to connect to your computer.

To use the USB cord, follow Apple’s instructions here.

To use Docs To Go follow these instructions:

In order to move files from your phone to your computer, you must first set up the Sync for your phone or iPad and Desktop computer to sync.

First, you need to pair your phone and your desktop. For more info on how to do that, see this post.

Once you have the computer and the iOS device paired, then you need to do one of the following:

Method 1:

  1. Open each file from the Phone tab in Docs To Go on your iOS device, and do a Save As.
  2. Tap /iPhone/ or /iPad/ under Location, and choose Desktop.
  3. Choose a folder to have your files sync to and hit Save.

NOTE: If it says “no files in this folder” and no folder shows up, then you need go back to your computer and do a Sync so that at least one folder shows up for you to sync to.

Method 2:

  1. Go the Phone tab and hit More/Select and choose the files you want to move to the computer.
  2. Tap the envelope icon on the bottom left and email yourself all the files that you want to move.
  3. Go to your computer and download the file attachments, and add them to Docs To Go Desktop to sync them BACK to your computer.
  4. Once they are all in the Desktop tab in Docs To Go on your phone, you can then delete them from the phone tab so you don’t have two copies of the same file.
