Habit: Get Everything Out of your Head
David Allen has a great quote in his book Getting Things Done: Your mind is for having ideas, not holding them. In that book, he discusses what he calls “open loops” which basically suggests that your brain will continue to remind you of things-to-be-done. This is a major source of distraction that most people don’t realize is happening. The way to combat that effect is to record those things-to-do in a place that you trust you will see again soon.
EVERYTHING IN ONE PLACE + DAILY PLANNING
This is related to the key habit we talk about in DailyBalance of: Keep Everything in One Place. The habit to master here is to recognize when your brain is nagging you about something and get it into DailyBalance. If you are practicing the daily planning habit, your brain will trust that you are on top of that thing and let it go. This leads to improved focus and feeling more in control. Use DailyBalance to tell your brain: “I’ve got this.”
BEING PROACTIVE
DailyBalance has a feature called the Task Collector. This is like a wizard that will walk you through common life areas and suggest tasks (and recurring tasks) that you might have. This is a great way to proactively get a lot of the things-to-do out of your head and into DailyBalance.
